The romantic brewing and cultural town of Freistadt is nestled in a wide valley in the Mühlviertel hills: the centre of our town is the main square. Our main square is probably one of the most beautiful medieval town squares. Within the town walls, the town displays many examples of Gothic architecture, the late medieval architectural style that characterised Freistadt.

Sheltered by the mighty keep and protected by two town gates, the well-preserved fortifications and the idyllic alleyways, squares and courtyards entice visitors to take a trip back in time. Freistadt, the largest landmark in the Mühlviertel, is considered a perfect example of the preservation of medieval town architecture.

The well-kept restaurants, coffee houses and patisseries invite you to linger. Freistadt is considered the shopping metropolis of the Mühlviertel - numerous attractively designed shop windows and nice shops for strolling, savouring and shopping.

Around the old town - the fortified town walls and towers, the mighty town gates (Linzertor and Böhmertor) with the devices for the drawbridges once installed there, the wide moat between the protective town walls, the town park to the east of the Böhmertor and the impregnable row of houses on the south side impress with their clear architecture and majestic beauty.
