Welcome to Villanders
Village idyll and high alpine enjoyment
The Villanderer Dorfgasse is well known: The inn "Zum Steinbock" (12th century) served the painter Franz von Defregger as a background for his painting "Das letzte Aufgebot".
In real life, Villanders is much less militant: its peaceful location, gently nestled on the eastern slope of the Sarntal Alps, stretches from the bed of the Eisack river up to the heights of the extensive Villanderer Alm, one of the largest and most beautiful high alpine pastures in the Alps.
Hiking paradise in summer and winter
The Villander hiking region begins on the banks of the Eisack at 481 m and continues up to the Villanderer Berg (2,509 m). The Villanderer Alm is pure hikers' paradise: the high alpine pasture in the middle of the Sarntal Alps offers endless hiking possibilities for all levels, cosy huts for refreshments and panoramas that reach from the glaciers of the main Alpine ridge far into the Dolomites. All in all, the hiking area around Villanders offers endless variety. The South Tyrolean cycle path along the Eisack, the mountain bike possibilities around the Villanders alpine pasture, the Keschtnweg, leisurely low mountain hikes through quiet hamlets, the alpine pasture paths on the second largest high alpine pasture in Europe. You will always find worthwhile destinations here!
