Lake Wolfgangsee - a source of joie de vivre

Lake Wolfgangsee is a lake in Austria. Most of it is located in the province of Salzburg and is one of the most famous lakes in the Salzkammergut. The neighbouring villages of Strobl, St. Gilgen, Abersee and Ried are in Salzburg; only the village of St. Wolfgang is in Upper Austria.

The Salzburg part of Lake Wolfgangsee is also known as Abersee. It owes this name to the fact that this part only rarely freezes over in unusually cold winters. (In other words, in normal winters it remains colloquially ‘aper’).

Liner shipping operates intensively on Lake Wolfgangsee. From St. Wolfgang to St. Gilgen there is only a footpath over the steep rock face of the ‘Falkenstein’. Lake Wolfgangsee has an area of 12.9 - 13.1 km². It is divided into two lake basins by the alluvial cone of the Zinkenbach stream. At this point, the lake is only 200 metres wide. It lies at an altitude of 538 metres above sea level and is 114 metres deep at its deepest point.
