An Old Benedictine Foundation, Innovative Museum Town, Highest Point of the Black Forest Railway

The first major endeavor: clearing and settling the sunny hillside. Benedictine monks accomplished this in the 11th century. With a lot of engineering skill and steam power, the Black Forest Railway reached its highest point in 1873. In the 20th century, the Steidinger brothers contributed to the rise of the phonograph industry with their companies: Dual and PE record players are now stars in the Phonomuseum. By the way, the Black Forest's "Genusswerkstatt" also makes records—out of chocolate.
