Welcome to Frankenmarkt!
Frankenmarkt, situated in the Vöcklatal valley between the southern foothills of the Kobernaußerwald and the Attergau, is one of the oldest markets in Upper Austria.
In the early Middle Ages, the Attergau was repopulated by Franks from the diocese of Bamberg. The ‘Frankenmark’ was created, a delimited area in which the Franks settled (‘frankomarchia’). The shape of the settlement has survived to this day from those distant times, as an elongated street settlement and the coat of arms with three white Franconian lilies on a blue background. Frankenmarkt was granted market rights (‘Frankenmarket’) in 1236. The so-called ‘Ackerbürgertum’ developed a flourishing trade in the following centuries.
The church history around Frankenmarkt can be traced back to the 12th century. In 1450, the seat of the aristocratic Stauff estate was built in the plain on the banks of the Vöckla.
