Bettwil is the highest municipality in the canton of Aargau on the border with the canton of Lucerne. It lies at the foot of the Lindenberg high above the Bünztal valley and Lake Hallwil. The neighbouring municipalities lie in four different districts: Boswil, Buttwil and Kallern in the district of Muri, Sarmenstorf in the district of Bremgarten, Fahrwangen in the district of Lenzburg and Schongau in the district of Hochdorf, canton of Lucerne.

Bettwil already formed its own office in the Middle Ages. The pride of the old people of Bettwil can be seen in the fact that in 1561 they had their own society disc made, the oldest known society disc in a rural community.
