The walk leading to the meadows of "I Ronc" is an adventure into the reckless traps of history. Among the proud and unyielding rocks of the Dolomites, on the line that closed the Austro-Hungarian defenses, an armed Fort avoided war. The Fort of Someda built in 1898 was already outdated by 1915. Dressed in moss and herbs in summer and soft snow in winter, it marks the step of this excursion along the course of Rif de Sèn Pelegrin. Almost a two-story granite cube with barrel-vaulted reinforced concrete roofs. Protected by a wide and deep moat, it still preserves the original iron door. Equipped with cannons, machine guns, and other artillery, it housed 8 officers and 146 soldiers. But, just at the outbreak of the war, the Fort was judged militarily ineffective. It today deserves a look, in remembrance of a past that divided and then united peoples who walked roads of incredible beauty. Watch them as you proceed today, in the freedom of an endless view.
Winter walk from Moena to Ronchi, passing through Someda
Starting from Piaz de Ramon, pass the narrow passage and climb the staircase on the right to reach Strada de Someda. Reach the first houses of the picturesque village, nestled under Piz Meda (from which it takes its name), and then the small square in front of the church of Saints Rocco, Sebastiano, and Fabiano. Continue uphill along Strada de Sèn Roch, soon leaving the village. The route passes in front of the Austrian fort from the First World War and follows the course of Rif de Sèn Pelegrin from above. Finally, you reach Ronchi (I Ronc), where the starting station of the Lusia cable car is located. The path, entirely paved, alternates short ramps of moderate slope with flat sections, making the route accessible and pleasant.
In Someda, look for the stumbling stone placed in front of the house where, in 1944, Richard Löwy and his family were arrested and deported to Auschwitz. A Jewish engineer, Löwy had lived in Moena during the First World War as an officer of the military engineering corps, saving many local young people from the war on the eastern front. Returning years later fleeing racial laws, he found refuge in the village until the German occupation, when he was captured and deported along with his loved ones.

We recommend always paying close attention to the type of terrain and being adequately equipped (hiking boots, crampons, and poles).
Carry in your backpack the essentials for any emergency situations, along with a minimal first aid kit.
1. Plan your excursion in advance based on your skills, the weather, the characteristics and conditions of the itinerary, and avalanche risk.
2. Always choose to go on excursions in company. If possible, rely on mountain professionals.
3. Make sure you have appropriate clothing and equipment with you (hiking boots, crampons, and poles).
4. Inform someone of your itinerary, return time, and any variations.
5. Go slowly, enjoy the panorama and the silence.
6. If you are uncertain about the direction, turn back.
7. Do not trample the cross-country and downhill tracks.
8. Respect the environment around you, taking your waste back down.
9. Also bring your animal friend, but only on a leash.
10. Help those in difficulty. In case of real emergency, call 112.
