Köllertal cycle path

At the starting point of the route, the Völklinger Hütte already towers over the city’s silhouette from afar. The blast furnace plant, shut down in 1986, is completely preserved and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 as a unique testimony to the history of technology. The gas blower house with its monumental blast machines houses changing exhibitions throughout the year. The cycle path initially runs relatively flat through the beautiful Köllertal. In Püttlingen, the cultural station, the ruins of the Bucherbach water castle in the Köllerbach district, and the park area at the Püttlingen little castle with the adjacent witches’ tower are ideal rest stops. Among the oldest church buildings in Saarland is the Protestant parish church St. Martin in Köllerbach. Its origins date back to the 1st millennium. Those interested in technology should not miss the clock museum in the “Clockmaker’s House.” In the second section of the route, the cycle path rises significantly from Heusweiler. In the center of Heusweiler, at the new marketplace, you will find various noteworthy historic buildings such as the Protestant parish church with choir from the 15th century and the opposite old Protestant parsonage. It was designed and built by the Saarbrücken Baroque master builder Stengel. To gain strength before the ascent to Mangelhausen, it is worth stopping at the “Herrgottswinkel,” a pub about 300 years old. Upon reaching the destination, you can roll back into the Saar valley on the Saar-Oster-Höhen cycle path or continue cycling on the high route towards St. Wendel.
