Tobogganing like the pros - and without any snow at all - in Ernstthal am Rennsteig.
Sledging down a slope in winter is no longer unusual. It gets more exciting when you cool off on a speedy toboggan ride on warm summer days. On a track that winds down a wooded slope and crosses several bridges along the way, the ride can be an unforgettable experience.
This need not remain an unfulfilled dream. All you have to do is come to Ernstthal am Rennsteig, a small town on the Rennsteig in the middle of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. On the Pappenheimer Berg, there is a summer toboggan run that presents pure pleasure to its passengers. Even when climbing to the start, no one breaks a sweat, because the drag lift, which has been converted for summer operation, pulls sleds and crew 500 metres up the mountain. On this occasion, the future bobsleigh pilot can check out the track and get in the mood for what awaits him on the descent.
Once they have reached the top - take another deep breath - then the sledder gets to work. On the 800-metre-long track, a height difference of 113.59 metres is overcome. But no one has to fear being catapulted out of the track at too high a speed. Before it could become dangerous, small signs along the track warn the bobsleigh pilots. The pull on the brake lever, which is located between the pilot's knees, prevents them from going too fast. Those who still feel a little queasy or want to enjoy the fun in pairs can simply climb aboard a two-seater. Everyone else flits down into the valley on the single-seater.
The summer toboggan run started operating in the summer of 1994. The season starts in April and ends around October, depending on the weather. The summer toboggan run is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, if necessary until 6 pm.
Should the weather actually be so bad that the summer toboggan run has to be closed, our guests in Ernstthal am Rennsteig/Lauscha need not fear boredom. When visiting the glassblowing demonstration sites, you can see the local handicraft. There are plenty of opportunities to get some exercise in the fresh air on the 50 kilometres of well-signposted hiking trails around Ernstthal. The starting point is the large car park at the valley station of the summer toboggan run.
Another attraction awaits the youngest visitors here. A car parade invites you to take a ride in petrol-powered vehicles suitable for children. The snack bar at the car park offers a wide range of hearty meals and refreshing drinks.
If you too would like to whizz down the Pappenheim hill on one of the little black runners, or if one of the other offers appeals to you, Ernstthal am Rennsteig is definitely the right place for you.
