History: According to legend, the castle first emerged from the remains of a Roman castle and was first mentioned in the records as "Veste Ort" (fortress city) in around 909. The massive tower gate and a number of window and door jambs were built by Emperor Friedrich III (1440 - 1493). The Seeschloß boasts an extremely picturesque triangular courtyard with arcades and Late Gothic exterior steps (1550); a graffito dating back to 1578 records the "Gößhöh" water level from the Traunsee lake flood.

From Easter, the municipality of Gmunden will require visitors to make a contribution for the upkeep of the Seeschloss Ort. Between 10 am and 6 pm, a contribution of €3 is kindly required per adult. Groups (from 10 people) pay €2 per person. Children aged 0 to 15 years go free. Those aged over 15 pay the adult rate.
